Thrifty Threads

It’s time for another installment of Thrifty Threads, AKA Most Stylish Compact-y Outfit, where readers model their favorite secondhand clothes.

A compact-y outfit is used or recycled, from Goodwill, a thrift store, a consignment shop, ebay, Craigslist, a yard sale, or anywhere else you find used clothing.

Today’s model is Larry, back for a repeat performance on Thrifty Threads. Larry’s wife Hilda is a longtime reader and they have both been featured in the past, as well as their grandson Mitchell. Click here to read Hilda’s post, here for Larry’s other appearance, and here to see their 13-year-old grandson Mitchell in his very hip thrift store finds.

I love this shirt Larry bought while he and Hilda were out “yard sale-ing,” which they often do on Saturday mornings. Larry found this Caribbean shirt for just $1, and knew right away it was a keeper. Hilda says he’s getting an eye for nice shirts and was very proud of this find, plus he already had slacks to match it.

My husband has a black version of this shirt and loves to wear it to summer parties. Larry, you look great! And who’d believe that shirt only cost a dollar. What a fantastic find! Thanks so much for sharing that photo!

Hilda brings up a good point, which is that when you’re shopping secondhand you do need to develop an eye for nice things. You have to look through a lot of junk and be able to spot a rose among the thorns. Sometimes I don’t have the patience, which is why most of my secondhand shopping so far has been done at a consignment shop with a modest inventory, and our annual clothing swap.

Thanks Larry for being a Thrifty Threads model again! Readers, it’s your turn. Put on your favorite secondhand outfit, snap a photo, and send it to me at barton.angela@gmail.com. Please put Thrifty Threads in the subject line. Don’t be shy, we all love to see your fabulous finds. And all ages and sizes are welcome.

Please share your best secondhand shopping tips and compliments for Larry in the Comments section.

What a fun shirt! My husband’s work shirts and many of his dress shirts have been bought at Goodwills or thrift stores for many years. It is amazing what you can find…

I love seeing Larry wear his thrifty shirts. Thank you for posting him, he does make a handsome model. We are having an “Ugly Christmas Sweater” party so we have been going to thrift shops to find one. I found mine and I will post pictures after we find one for Larry. The prizes are also something we find at a thrift store, and they can be anything. This is our second party like this and it’s a lot of fun. A lot of fun for everyone and not much money spent. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Hilda

Hilda, the “ugly Christmas sweater” party sounds fun! there are indeed some ugly sweaters out there. I remember a time in the 80s when men’s sweaters were quite hideous. And then there are the Christmas-themed ones, that can be really funny as well. Like Colin Firth in Bridget Jone’s Diary and his reindeer jumper.

We would love to see you both in your ugly sweaters, so send them along before Christmas and I’ll post them. Thanks Hilda. Happy Thanksgiving to your whole family.
