Thrifty Threads

Welcome to Thrifty Threads, AKA Most Stylish Compact-y outfit, where readers model their favorite secondhand clothes.

A compact-y outfit is used or recycled, from Goodwill, a thrift store, a consignment shop, a yard sale, a clothing swap, ebay, freecycle, Craigslist, or anywhere else you find used clothing.

Today’s model is Mitchell, and you know I am over the moon with excitement because he is the first young man to appear on Thrifty Threads. Mitchell’s grandma Hilda sent in this photo, and when I asked if she was sure he wouldn’t mind if I posted it, she said he put this outfit on for the picture just so she could send it to me. He already knew about Thrifty Threads because his grandma and grandpa had both been featured. Click here to see Hilda’s appearance, and here for her husband Larry’s.

Mitchell’s Hollister T-shirt and Gap shorts are the height of fashion, so no one would ever know they were secondhand. And since the cost for both pieces was less than $10, his first thrift store outing was a big success. Hilda says he was so excited to get such a good deal and to tell her about his find. Mitchell went shopping with his mom and his sister at a consignment store called Plato’s Closet in Spokane, Washington, about two hours from where they live in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Mitchell is 12 years old and he’s starting 7th grade at Sandpoint Middle School. He loves school, playing soccer, riding his dirt bike, fishing, hunting, jet skiing, swimming, rock climbing with his dad, math, thinking games, playing a lot, and being a brother to his sister Courtney. He also loves to read “thick books,” and some of his favorites are The Harry Potter series, The Last Olympian series, and The Rangers Apprentice series.

Mitchell, thanks so much for being on Thrifty Threads. Those are great scores! I hope you like being a model. And thanks Hilda, for sending in that terrific photo. Okay readers, keep sending in those photos. Put on your favorite secondhand find, snap a photo, and send it to me at barton.angela@gmail.com.

Do you shop secondhand? Let’s give Mitchell a big hand for being the first young male model on Thrifty Threads by leaving a note in the Comments section.

What a handsome young man and love, love, love how he wears those fun, colorful shorts. Stylish and confident. He looks amazing.

  2. Terry says

He looks fantastic. Most of the time kids clothes are in pretty good shape.
They grow out of the clothing before it gets too worn.
My daughter likes to shop garage sales for her sons clothing.

What a great picture and sounds like a great kid! I love that he looks so self confident! He reminds me of my 10year old…they have alot of the same interests. I think it’s great to teach our kids about the value of “second hand”…it’s economically and environmentally prudent!

I like that phrase, Pidge – “economically and environmentally prudent.” I’ll have to borrow it!

    yay,Mitchell!
BTW, I just stumbled upon your blog. I like your self-challenge to buy nothing new. We’ve mostly lived that way for …oh my gosh…8 years, maybe? Maybe I should have been keeping track LOL I just bought brand new shoes for one of my kids (amazing sale) but I think that was the first NEW item in many months.

Jupiter, Welcome! And congrats on 8 years of mostly buying nothing new. I found that after I became used to it, the idea of going back to buying new stuff willy nilly was pretty much impossible. I generally only do it when the alternative would be way too expensive or time consuming now.

      thanks for commenting!

Thanks everyone for your comments! I agree that Mitchell is a great kid and a very handsome model, and I am so happy he was willing to pose for Thrifty Threads and inspire so many people.

Thanks again, Mitchell! And Hilda too!
