Thrifty Threads

Welcome to Thrifty Threads, AKA Most Stylish Compact-y outfit, where readers model their favorite secondhand clothes.

A compact-y outfit is used or recycled, from Goodwill, a thrift store, a consignment shop, a yard sale, ebay, Craigslist, a clothing swap, or anywhere else you find secondhand clothing.

Today’s model is Beth, modeling her refashioned Gap jeans. They were originally $2.50 at Goodwill, and after wearing them for a couple of years they got a hole in the knee. Beth wasn’t ready to get rid of them just yet, so she decided to try her hand at remaking them into patchwork jeans and loved the result. My favorite part are the flowers near the bottom of the right leg, which you can see in the photo on the right. These jeans remind me of the “patches and embroidery” jeans I used to love to design and wear when I was a little girl back in the 70s. Great job, Beth! The rest of the outfit is also from Goodwill, a J Crew cashmere sweater for $3.50 and boots for under $5.

You can read more about Beth’s jean project and see more photos on her blog Thrifty Living. The tagline is “careful in the management of money or resources” and she blogs about coupon deals, gardening, CSA delivery, recipes, and other frugal projects. She’s also a follower of The Frugal Girl’s “Food Waste Fridays,” of which I am a big supporter. I watched our food waste and photographed it on this blog for more than a year, and it was quite an eye opener! We hardly ever waste food anymore.

Thanks Beth for those cute photos! And kudos on your creative sewing skills! Readers, it’s your turn. Put on your favorite secondhand outfit, snap a photo, and send it to me at barton.angela@gmail.com. We all love to see  the treasures you’re all finding and remaking, so don’t be shy. And remember, everyone is welcome on Thrifty Threads, young and old, large and small, male and female.

I love your re-fashioned jeans. My girls used to buy 2nd hand jeans and come home and re-fashion them using a cheese grater (to make worn out areas and holes), paint and patches. They had a lot of fun and did a great job themselves. Thanks for bringing back the memories. I also read your blog on Food Waste Fridays and now to the refrigerator I go to toss out 5 (I’m ashamed to say) artichokes that I never got around to cooking. Shame on me. Thanks for your encouragement Beth.

Beth looks really hip in those jeans. Great job at keeping those jeans alive and kicking. Thanks for sharing!
