Thrifty Threads

May 26, 2011 by Angela Leave a Comment

It’s time for another installment of Thrifty Threads, AKA Most Stylish Compact-y outfit, where readers model their favorite secondhand clothes.

A compact-y outfit is used or recycled, from Goodwill, a thrift store, a consignment shop, ebay, Craigslist, a yard sale, or anywhere else you find secondhand clothing.

Today’s model is Diana, back for the 3rd time on Thrifty Threads. This time Diana is modeling her awesome finds from a recent REI sale. Since I’m an REI member, I was thrilled to find out that REI sells used clothing and gear at some of its store sales. And since I just got an email about a sale this weekend, I thought this would be a good time to tell you about Diana’s incredible deals. In case you’ve never heard of it, REI is an outdoor clothing and gear store. Diana says their branch in Northern California has a used gear sale in the parking lot a few times a year. If you don’t have an REI near you, I’ll bet other sporting goods stores do these types of sales as well.

I absolutely love all three of these scores. First, the jacket Diana is modeling is such a beautiful color I have to admit to a bit of envy. In my book, that is a perfect jacket. It was marked down from $178 to $29.93. Diana says there’s nothing wrong with it, but found out from a salesperson that it was a return that was missing a hood liner so they couldn’t put it back on the “new” rack.

The Keen shoes were a bit worn, but Diana says she loves Keen shoes and they’re hard to find at the thrift store so she was happy to walk away with a great pair of shoes for less than $6. And the boots? Originally priced at $160, Diana bought them for $9.93 just because one of the zipper pulleys was broken. She was able to replace it for free and ended up with a never-worn pair of awesome boots. Wow!

Diana says that since they also got a pair of new pants and a Columbia shirt worth $110 for her husband for less than $20 for both items, it was a great day for great deals. And it’s motivated me to do a bit of research about the used gear sales at the REI near us, as well as a few other outdoor clothing stores in the area.

Thanks Diana for sharing those amazing finds! Readers, it’s your turn. Put on your favorite secondhand outfit, snap a photo, and send it to me at barton.angela@gmail.com. We all want to see your thrifty scores, so don’t be shy. All ages, sizes, and genders are welcome on Thrifty Threads.

Have you ever been to a used gear sale?  Let us know in the Comments section. And if you missed Diana’s first appearance on this blog, click here to see the spectacular wedding gown she purchased on Craigslist.

About Angela

On January 1st, 2009, I joined The Compact and pledged to Buy Nothing New for one year. It sounded like the perfect way to converge my desire to live on less money with my interest in living a simpler life and trying to lessen my carbon footprint. The experiment was so rewarding that I'm continuing with it indefinitely. This blog documents my journey in non-consumerism.
