Thrifty Threads

December 9, 2010 by Angela Leave a Comment

Welcome to Thrifty Threads, AKA Most Stylish Compact-y outfit, where readers model their favorite secondhand clothes.

A Compact-y outfit is used or recycled, from Goodwill, a thrift store, a consignment shop, ebay, craigslist, freecycyle, a yard sale, a clothing swap, or anywhere else you buy secondhand clothing.

Today’s model is Kristen from the fabulous blog The Frugal Girl. Kristen has been a frequent Thrifty Threads model, and in fact she was the inspiration for the segment, which you can read about here.

Kristen bought this cute new-from-Target brand denim skirt at Goodwill for $5. In the “summer” photo on the left, the top also comes from Goodwill, it was a used Target brand called Merona and it cost $3. Kristen says she almost didn’t buy it because she never wears orange, but she liked the high neck for doing photo shoots (she has to bend over a lot), and now she likes the color. It looks great on her! Kristen’s son Joshua took the photo and I’ll bet it’s him making her laugh. I love how he’s captured the moment.

Her youngest daughter Zoe, in the photo on the right, also makes her laugh a lot and loves to be photographed. On Kristen’s other blog, Frugal Girl 365, she posts a photo a day, cool and funny shots of her kids or other everyday things. I confess Kristen’s blog is one of the few where I enjoy the “cute kid photos.” It has a lot to do with her photography skills, they’re not  just cute kids, she manages to capture the essence of the amazing human beings they are.

The “winter” photo on the right also features Goodwill finds: $3 for the long-sleeved black top and a dollar for the new-in-torn-package tights. The boots are NOT from Goodwill, Kristen paid an incredible $13 for them at a Target clearance sale years ago. What a steal.

Since The Frugal Girl is one of my absolute favorite blogs, and Kristen has been on Thrifty Threads three or four times before, you’ve probably heard me rave about her unless you’re brand new to my blog. She amazes me with the consistency of the useful information and cheerful attitude she displays every day. She features a new baking post every week, and she was the inspiration behind Food Waste Friday, which has helped me waste so much less food along with saving money. Her basic French bread recipe is awesome, and I love her holiday-themed posts, including this tutorial on sewing reusable gift bags out of old clothes. She recently did a series on contentment, and another on productivity, each of which was packed with insight and practical tips. I really can’t say enough good things about Kristen or her blog, so if you’ve somehow missed hearing me talk about it or never checked it out, I encourage you to visit right away.

Thanks Kristen, for those fantastic photos! Readers, it’s your turn! Put on your favorite secondhand outfit, snap a photo, and send it to me at barton.angela@gmail.com. I’m still hoping for a party dress that I can post during this holiday season. So don’t be shy, join the Thrifty Threads models who are showing us all how to be both frugal and stylish. Because you don’t have to spend a fortune to be a fashionista!

Please leave your secondhand shopping advice plus compliments for Kristen in the Comments section. And click here to check out previous installments of Thrifty Threads.

About Angela

On January 1st, 2009, I joined The Compact and pledged to Buy Nothing New for one year. It sounded like the perfect way to converge my desire to live on less money with my interest in living a simpler life and trying to lessen my carbon footprint. The experiment was so rewarding that I'm continuing with it indefinitely. This blog documents my journey in non-consumerism.
