Thrifty Threads

October 21, 2010 by Angela Leave a Comment

Welcome to another installment of Thrifty Threads, AKA Most Stylish Compact-y outfit, where readers model their favorite secondhand clothes.

A Compact-y outfit is used or recycled, from Goodwill, a thrift store, a consignment shop, a yard sale, craigslist, ebay, a clothing swap, or anywhere else you find used clothing.

Today’s model is Leah Jo, whose grandmother Karen sent in these adorable photos. Karen’s daughter Amber (Leah Jo’s mom) was a Thrifty Threads model awhile back, modeling this gorgeous wedding gown, which cost just $125, a fraction of what it would have cost retail.

Leah Jo is wearing two different frocks purchased at the Wee Britches Consignment sale hosted twice a year near where they live in northwest Tennessee. The dress in the first picture was just $2, and the one in the second was $3. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: thrift shopping makes even more sense for growing children who are usually only going to wear their clothes for one season. Both of these dresses are so cute, and note the temporary ladybug tattoo Leah Jo is sporting on her ankle. Very hip. With those blond curls and blue eyes and those cheeks, I think she’s a natural model.

Thanks Karen, for sending in those fantatic photos. I love to get pictures, and I have to admit it’s especially fun to get cute photographs of children. Readers, it’s your turn. Put on your favorite secondhand outfit, snap a photo, and send it to me at barton(dot)angela(at)gmail(dot)com. Please put Thrifty Threads in the subject line and if you don’t hear back from me, I didn’t receive it. And if you’re too shy to send a photo of yourself, ask your husband, or daughter, niece, or granddaughter if they’d like to participate. We like to see all types and ages of people modeling their thrift store scores!

What are your favorite secondhand shopping tips? Please share them in the Comments section. And click here if you want to check out previous installments of Thrifty Threads.

About Angela

On January 1st, 2009, I joined The Compact and pledged to Buy Nothing New for one year. It sounded like the perfect way to converge my desire to live on less money with my interest in living a simpler life and trying to lessen my carbon footprint. The experiment was so rewarding that I'm continuing with it indefinitely. This blog documents my journey in non-consumerism.
