That’s a photo of our friends’ adorable kids, dressed up as Pippi Longstocking and Travis Bickle. Great costumes. I always loved Halloween when I was a kid- what’s not to like? Dressing up plus candy, two of my favorite things.
As an adult, I’ve had fun several times going to costume parties, but I think it’s still the most fun to watch the kids. And sadly, our neighborhood doesn’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters. When we first bought our house, I was so excited to give out candy and we carved pumpkins and put them out and my husband set up a scary “alien” shadow in the window, and then only a couple of kids came to our door. After a few years, we gave up and didn’t even buy candy.
Then last year, I had almost forgotten it was Halloween and there was a knock on the door. I opened it to two little girls about seven years old, dressed as corpse brides and looking so cute. I felt awful because I knew we had no candy. But I told them to wait and then I ran around the house looking for candy, and we had none, but I did find two juice paks and two fruit leathers. I thought it was pretty pitiful but I brought them out and apologized, actually saying, “I’m sorry to be the lame lady who gives you fruit leathers and juice paks.” They started squealing, “I LOVE apple juice!” and “I LOVE fruit leather!” Oh, little girls. So cute. They were breaking into the juice paks before they’d even gotten down our path. You can read the entire story here in last year’s post.
So, if you haven’t bought any Halloween candy yet, despite conventional wisdom, some children do like treats other than candy. Although I guess we’ll never go back to apples and home-baked goods.
Please share your favorite Halloween treats and the best costumes you saw this year, for both kids and adults, in the Comments section. And most of all, have fun!
